ESG Frameworks
EcoVadis
Bondalti received the platinum medal from EcoVadis, the highest award given by this global organization dedicated to assessing the sustainability of companies. Compared to the previous year, the company increased its score from 82 to 83 points (on a scale of 100), reinforcing its position in the Top 1% of companies in the sector.
COP – Communication on Progress (UNGC)
Since joining the UNGC in 2023, Bondalti has completed annually the Communication on Progress questionnaire. The COP is a comprehensive report in which companies communicate their activities in accordance with the UN Global Compact Principles, demonstrating their commitment.
CDP Climate Change
Bondalti has responded to the CDP questionnaire for three consecutive years in the Climate Change category, and in 2024 submitted its response independently and publicly for the first time. We have been improving our score with each new questionnaire, achieving a B score in the latest assessment.
Global Reporting Initiative Index
Bondalti has been publicly reporting sustainability information, namely the GRI index, since 2015. We are proud to present a benchmark report for the Portuguese market and the industrial sector.
Highlights of the Year
OPA on Ercros: size and competitiveness
As part of its growth and internationalization strategyinternationalization strategy, Bondalti launched a takeover bid in March for 100% of the Spanish company Ercros. Once completed, the merger between these Iberian leaders will create a group with the size and technical capabilities to compete with the main players in the sector, investing in continuous innovation and sustainability, and anticipating the challenges facing the European chemical industry.
Protecting biodiversity: Iberian bear in focus
With a holistic view of sustainability, Bondalti strengthened its partnership in 2024 with the Cantabria Natura project, promoted by the Government of Cantabria, the Spanish region where the company has an industrial complex.This commitment ensures the protection of the Iberian brown bear, combining innovative technologies with initiatives that harmonize coexistence between local communities and biodiversity, promoting balance and prosperity in the region.
Antwerp Declaration: Bondalti among the first signatories
The signing of the Antwerp Declaration reaffirmed Bondalti's role as a key player in building a sustainable and competitive industrial future in Europe. The company was one of the first signatories, reflecting Bondalti's belief in the transformative power of cooperation and innovation to ensure the resilience and progress of basic industries. Supported by a wide range of sectors, representing €550 million in added value and 7.8 million jobs, the Antwerp Declaration underlines the crucial importance of clarity, predictability, and trust in European industrial policy.
New cutting-edge technology at the Estarreja plant
In 2024, Bondalti celebrated the start of operations of a new electrolyzer, the first major milestone in a modernization investment that includes the installation of a total of nine such devices, which are more efficient and feature state-of-the-art technology. The program is expected to be completed by the end of the first half of 2025 and represents an investment of around €38 million, co-financed under Component 11 of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) for the decarbonization of industry.
Most awarded company by the largest European chemical industry association
Bondalti was the only company to receive three awards at the Responsible Care® Awards 2024, an initiative promoted annually by Cefic – the European Chemical Industry Council.
Bondalti Water launches Biogas: renewable energy at the heart of innovation
Bondalti Water has redefined the potential of the circular economy with the launch of Bondalti Biogas, a new business area that combines proprietary technologies, operational efficiency, and environmental commitment, enabling waste to be transformed into renewable energy—biogas or biomethane. In Spain, it is estimated that 40% of the natural gas consumed by industry could be replaced by biogas.In Portugal, the country could convert almost 10% of its natural gas consumption to biomethane, a figure that could reach 19% by 2040.
ISCC Plus: certified green production
The ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) certification obtained by the Estarreja industrial unit certifies that the raw materials used in its products come from sustainable sources. By ensuring traceability and sustainability throughout the value chain, the company aligns itself with the principles of certified green production, promoting the circular economy and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders in favor of sustainable development.
Lifthium project develops green lithium refining
In 2024, Lifthium Energy joined IPCEI EuBaTin, becoming the only Portuguese company with a green lithium conversion project in this European consortium, thus signaling the progress of its unique proposal.Lifthium, a subsidiary of the José de Mello Group and Bondalti, is developing an innovative lithium refining process using electrolysis and renewable energy, which will reduce carbon emissions by 50% compared to traditional methods.
